Happy Valentine’s Day. It’s like the most important holiday of the year! (After just about every other holiday) So it is on this day, every year, I think about that long lost Valentine. You guessed it, I’m talking about David Furst.
Well, let’s be honest here, I’m really talking about a day long gone by when I headed down to the WAMU studios in DC (A somewhat regular activity for me at the time) to record a commentary for Metro Connection (a show since gone by) about my not so special attachment to VD. (By that, I do mean Valentine’s Day, just to be clear)
This year, I thought I’d dig up that old commentary, get to relive the good old days, and hear David Furst’s sweet, sweet voice – something we in the DC Metro area have been deprived of lately. (He’s at WNYC now. WAMU lost him!)
Here’s the commentary in question, or questionable commentary, if you prefer:
Funny thing is, when I listened to it again, after all these years, I realized I was on the show with someone I have since become acquainted with – Luke Brindley. Luke is part of the famous Brindley Brothers clan. Yes, that sounds Irish mafia-esque, but actually they run Jammin’ Java. I hadn’t started Better Said Than Done back in 2009, so hadn’t had my first show yet at Jammin’ Java. We’ve had quite a few there over the years so, imagine my surprise to hear that the Brindley Brothers are Jersey boys – just like me! (um, yeah) Guess we all find each other eventually.
For this Valentine’s Day, if my commentary hasn’t turned you off to the idea of gift giving, might I recommend a copy of the romantic thriller Caged for your sweetie? Okay, it might not be super romantic, but there are a lot of bleeding hearts in it! And there’s even a mention of the infamous David Furst himself.
Or, if you prefer something a little more feminist, why not get yourself, or a loved one, tickets to Better Said Than Done’s upcoming show at – you guessed it – Jammin’ Java. Roar: True Tales of Women Warriors is all about empowering women. Now there’s a Valentine’s Day gift I can get behind!
